Ever since I began speaking back in 1991 (18 years ago) to underprivileged, impoverished, and imprisoned persons; my heart was immediately gripped by the attentiveness with which my audience responded to my messages.

Let me tell you, speaking to impoverished people and children is no easy task. They can see through insincerity and hogwash in a heartbeat. Conversely, they can also quickly connect with heartfelt sincerity and a man who has personally overcome adversity.

Within the Orlando prison at 33rd Street, I gained clearance and access through my local church; which gave me total liberty to round up inmates and speak to them about personal empowerment and a wide array of other topics. The response of the inmates was tremendous. Honestly, I was blown away and had no idea they would be so eager and attentive when I spoke.

A correctional officer told, “They aren’t usually like this for the other speakers that come through here. They really like you!”

This is how my speaking career. When I discovered that I wasn’t like all the other speakers and had a speaking gift of my own, I began to take speaking seriously. Who would have thought as a speaker that I would learn to blossom among the poor and within a prison? Yet as I reflect over the course of my speaking career, I cannot honestly think of a better place for a speaker to speak forth life into the lives of people. Speakers are to bring unconditional love and resurrecting life to people. That is what speaking is about in simplicity. You awaken, impart hope, and impact people.

Beyond being excited about exciting and the amazing results it can bring in the lives of people, I am impregnated with purpose so that wherever I go and to whomever I speak sudden changes occur.

I was a fiery trailblazer going where few men dared to go. I’ve been to over 90 countries, more than 50 islands, and 6 continents thus far speaking life into the people of the world.

Upon leaving Orlando and going overseas, I was met with the same cheerful exuberance by countless crowds of people throughout the nations of the world to which I traveled. Even more so the majority of the time as no speakers had ever dared to travel to many of these impoverished and war-torn nations. People within these lands were desperate for a word of encouragement from a motivational speaker.

Once I realized my words carried weight, were penetrating hearts, and changing lives; I began to put my spoken words in book form to further multiply the impact of my message. Again the response was phenomenal.

Quite frankly being a successful speaker is a humbling experience for three reasons. The first is as you speak to a crowd, you pull from your own life experiences, which you often purposefully revisit to help others. The second is you are continually amazed at how your own personal hardships and struggles were divinely designed to bring you to the place where you are today to help others. Thirdly as a speaker it is awe inspiring to see people hang on your every word and simultaneously a huge responsibility, because you may be breathing the last word of hope into somebody’s heart who is facing overwhelming odds and life threatening circumstances.

I therefore take speaking extremely seriously and equate speaking to my former job of a lifeguard when I was in college. As a college youth I served as a lifeguard at several water parks and at a city lake over the course of a few years. Speaking like lifeguarding is such that you have to always be alert, keep your eyes open, and be attentive to the crowd of people before you.

Upon returning to the college circuit, my speaking flourished because overseas college students celebrated me the most and were those who most deeply resonated with my messages. College speakers carry something special for college students during that pivotal and transitional time of their lives, while they are in preparation for something greater in the future.

College speaks volumes to me in retrospect, because those were transformative years for me. College speaks truth and reality to the hearts of students experientially merely by the fact kids are no longer living under mom and dad’s roof and now must be more accountable to care for themselves. College speaks fresh joys, experiences, and challenges of all sorts and sizes. College speaks a dynamic social life that must be wisely balanced with academic pursuits, which shall prove to be the professional foundation for one’s future.

As a highly requested speaker within the university speaker series of lecturers frequenting universities and colleges worldwide, college speaking can be very demanding as the time traveling can be exhausting for some less experienced speakers.

College speaking is not just something we do for fun and forget about thereafter. The true college speaker carries a heartfelt burden for students and is a warrior in heart, knowing his or her message will impact, transform, and potentially save the lives of impressionable college students.

That being said I take college speaking very seriously, exercise regularly to strengthen my body for the demands of global travel, and devour books on an ongoing basis (when I’m not also writing books – and I’m the author of more than 100 books to date) to prepare myself to deliver the highest energy and richest content possible to impact every college and university to whom I speak.
